‘Braving the Tides:

Chinese Individuals Navigating  Social Changes’

5th-6th June 2024, University of York

CALL FOR PAPERS

The British Postgraduate Network for Chinese Studies is pleased to announce a call for papers for the 2024 Annual Conference, to be held on 5th-6th June 2024 at the University of York. This interdisciplinary conference will bring scholars from various fields together to explore how Chinese individuals have navigated social change.

As the third decade of the 21st century begins, monumental changes are occurring worldwide. On the one hand, the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic have tested human survival and exacerbated pre-existing conflicts and crises. On the other, technological advancements, with artificial intelligence at the forefront, have presented new ways of working and living. Waves of social change have swept through societies, leaving imprints on individuals.  Yet social change is nothing new but has affected people in different ways throughout history. How have these societal changes created, engaged, and influenced the experiences of individuals in Chinese societies and communities across the globe? From past to present, how have individuals negotiated social, political, economic, and/or cultural changes?

We invite submissions engaging with the theme of individual experience of social change across all disciplines. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

●  Anthropology and Sociology

●  Archaeology

●  Art and History of Art

●  Cultural Studies

●  Economics

●  Education

●  Environment and Geography

●  Film, Media and Performing Arts
